fallen oakland police officer. he passed away last saturday after being critically injured in a crash while on duty nearly 6 years ago are charles clifford was at the service today. it was held in castro valley. here in castro valley on friday at the 3 crosses church, hundreds of uniformed police officers from all across the bay area in california. >> along with family and friends remembered former oakland police officer jordan wingate wingate was severely injured in the line of duty back in august of 2018. he spent most of the time since then on life support this past weekend. he died from his injuries. his casket arrived here at the tree crosses church just before 11 o'clock on friday, his arrival was greeted by officers from the california highway patrol oakland hayward, san leandro, san francisco, san jose, along with sheriff's deputies from alameda county and san francisco and others. he was remembered as an excellent police officer and a good man, a son, a brother.

firefighters to tell people nearby to stap inside and close their windows. the building was made of redwood. so it did not collapse. no one was inside because it's being renovated. that's why they're scaffolding outside. no one was hurt. the cause of the fire is under investigation. and pacifica police want to know if you recognize this person because they're looking for this man because they say he was seen starting a fire at pacific has fairway park on april 10th. they say that he's visited the archery range at the park several timeshover the last month. a few looks familiar contact pacifica police. and now to a crime that was caught on camera. a local business burglarized right in the middle of the day. and the owner of this oakland donut shop says the thief was a regular customer kron four's terisa stasio spoke with her about this loss. >> in the cleft, i also inclu the civilian camera in the business. that is savannah

chan. she and her husband own decks donut on high street in oakland. and this is what happened thursday. >> she says one of their regular customers waited for a pause in the normal hectic rush and came back into the store crash the front case and ran off with the cash register. >> never thought they would do that to us. >> how much do you think was stolen? >> that can it. >> i spoke with channel on friday following up on her social media post about the crime. she says that she typically empties the register, but it was a busy morning. she says that they open the donut shop 20 years ago and love being a part of the community. my husband and i think >> in business and they both 7 minutes away, you know. i tried to take family and it's been a shooting the surprise

francisco just before he attended a fundraising dinner for his senate campaign. thieves broke into his car and thursday when was park today, downtown parking garage. that's according to the san francisco chronicle. the thieves stole his bag and we've got a business suit to wear. ship. still went to that event in burlingame. he did, though, have to wear just the t-shirt and hiking best he had on others were dressed up in suits. he is facing republican steve garvey in the november general election for the open u.s. senate seat from california. kron 4 did reach out to the ship campaign about this. and they just confirmed the newspaper story. we also reached out to the san francisco police department and we're told there are no police reports related to this incidents. taking a live look outside from our camera atop of mount tam. it's windy out there camera doing a little bit of shaking so we can see that and maybe feel just. a little seasick. miguel, on sale now with our forecast for

at 05:00pm. so in about 2 hours, well, still remain in the 30's. it looks like and same thing for dinner time at 06:07pm, saturday looks breezy as well as if you're out for a little league. the farmers market just pack that jacket and hold on to your hats. current temperatures are pretty mild now. so whek i come back, we do have a warming trend in store for the next 7 days. back to you. thank you, gayle. now to the south bay where the man accused of attacking the police officer protecting san jose mayor matt mahan appearing before a judge right now for his arraignment. >> this incident happened on tuesday as a crowd for crew was in the middle of an interview with the mayor in downtown san jose. leslie pollard is seen here punching the plainclothes police officer assigned to protect the mayor. pollard has been charged with felony resisting an officer by means of threat or violence. he is also charged with misdemeanor battery and disturbing the peace. san jose police say pollard is also dealing with an outstanding warrant for and

arrest out of georgia for resisting arrest with violence and in response to this incident, the san jose silicon valley naacp has released a statement questioning the officers de escalation training. it reads hear the officer involved in the altercation did not clearly identify himself as a law enforcement officer. and it appears that that there was no legal basis for instructing the pedestrian to move from his location in a public space. the pedestrians reaction, although stating a warning should have been met with a more measured response from the officer considering the circumstances kron four's jack molmud court right now. hill details on that arraignments coming up during kron. 4 news at 5. and there's also now a hotline in alameda county for the victims of cases that are being reviewed by the district attorney district attorney pamela price says her office uncovered what may be a pattern of misconduct and 35 cases dating back almost 30 years. prosecutors may have excluded black and

jewish people from juries on purpose. price as family members of the victims by those on death row are now being informed about what's going on. but anyone who has not been contacted should reach out to them directly. and we do have the right links for you to be able to do that on our website. kron 4 dot com. you know, 3 of the board of trustees at city college of san francisco voting to pass a policy that will allow non u.s. citizens students to vote in school elections. the board president alan wong proposing this change saying it would give more students a voice in how their school is managed under this proposal, non citizens, students, but still need to be at least 18 and a resident in the city in order to cast their vote. the measure now heads to the citywide ballot through the san francisco board of supervisors. criminal trespassing charges have been

dropped against some 60 pro-palestinian protesters who were arrested at ut austin. this is video from earlier in the week showing law enforcement clashing with these people wednesday after ordering the crowd to disperse. deputies say it led to at least 57 arrests. but all of the charges have now been dropped because they quote, lack sufficient probable cause in order to proceed. stanford students protesting the word gaza on campus are now facing the possibility of being suspended. the university president sending out a letter to all students today saying that overnight camping as a former protest violate university policy. the president saying the pro-palestinian protesters set up tents on the lawn of white plaza so they could sleep there overnight. and this type of protesting has been happening at universities all across the u.s.. we just talked about ut austin, also columbia and yale. students involved say they understand the risk of what they're doing, but they still think it's important. >> there were to get arrested

>> multiple bay area, law enforcement agencies recovered more than $300,000 worth of stolen goods in oakland called for swift. all met with one of the several east bay police departments that helped make this bust. >> a message to thieves continuing to raid retail stores and steal without fear of accountability are taking crime epidemic seriously. well-marked, tj maxx and sunglass hut are among the retailers victimized by a fencing operation that was running out of oakland. the san ramon police department was one of several law

enforcement agencies assisting the california highway patrol's organized retail theft task force to break it up. we definitely want to help alleviate some of the criminal element within our communities. fencing means the illegal resale of stolen goods. and in this case, investigators recovered $326,000 worth of stuff. the investigation began last september in san mateo county when sheriff's deputies arrested several people linked to retail theft in the area just 2 months. leader san ramon, police sergeant deserve all the says his department linked to women to that retail theft ring after they were arrested again for stealing from a local. so for >> taking off the fence and operations and discovering them it also the trickle down effect would also hopefully at that are some of the criminal element from hitting a retail establishments. the 3 agencies obtain search warrants for 2 oakland homes in a storage container where they found the items and made one arrest last

week. the has been returned back to the retailers from the ones we were able identify. >> the task force help them. actually spearhead of that operation in san ramon, philippe djegal, all kron. 4 news. >> we're learning some new details about that fiery car crash in pleasanton that killed a family of 4. police say 2 children were killed. they were under the age of 15. they also say speed may have been a factor in this crash. there are now some flowers in the area where the car crashed on wednesday night. this is right near foothill road switches from 2 lanes into one just south of stone. ridge drive. police say it appears that the driver lost control of the car and crashed into a large oak tree. officers say there's no indication of alcohol or foul play. in this crash. we are waiting to learn the names of the victims. they're still trying reach out to family. we'll keep you updated as new information comes into our newsroom. new at to know at 3. a lawsuit has been filed after a man was

tased by east bay regional park police. he's now on life support earlier this month. dante faison and his friend were eating food in a car. his car at martin luther king junior regional shoreline park. and they say that they were approached by park police officers because the tags on the car were expired. and during that stop deontay attempted to run away and they say he ended up going into the water of a nearby estuary police officers then deployed a taser into his back. his lawyers say he struggled for about a half an hour in the water while the officers were standing around and watching until he became unconscious and he's been in a coma ever since he's on life support right now, his family has filed a lawsuit against the park district and the county lawyers for the family have released a statement. it reads in part that their experience with alameda county officials here was reckless in regard for human life and at best a disastrous result of negligence and intentional assault and battery deontay

his family in the citizens of alameda county deserve better and should not have to worry that their trip to a local park will end with someone on their deathbed. we're reaching out to the county to get a response will let you know when we hear one. southwest airlines pulling service from airports in 4 different cities right now. the airline blaming it on delays with getting planes from boeing, southwest stopping service to and from houston, bellingham, washington, syracuse, new york, and mexico. this is going to start on august 4th and southwest. also thinking about getting rid of those open single class seating on its aircrafts. in a recent interview, the ceo bob jordan said the company was weighing options for cabin reconfiguration to address its recent revenue shortfall. right now, jordan says the airline has not made any decisions on starting a new strategy, but said that studies and what they could do have yielded some interesting results. and a live look now

2 high school students on a mission to advocate for tenants rights and they have even formed an organization all on their sons are mult are attend. gunn high school there in 11th grade. and now they've been out in the community working to make sure that renters know their rights when it comes to eviction discrimination and unsafe living conditions. >> organization is called bay tree and they are here with us in studio so we can get to know a little bit more about them. what you're trying to do. maya and zara, thank you for joining us here in studio. thank you for calling. i'm just so impressed with what you're doing and what you're trying to do. why was tenant rights, something that you felt so passionate about will start over here and we can. we'll get your take on it to absolutely so. tenants rights really important to us just because the housing crisis affects so many people in america.

>> and especially in the bay area, you see so many instances of tenants rights violations and we think it's really important for us as youth to advocate for it. and this was part of a social justice class that you're taking while you're at gunn high school. >> what do you see as the and also tell people at bay tree stands for? because it's an interesting name, right to stand to stand for bay area youth for tenants rights, education and empowerment, which ashore into a tree. >> that there is a lot of potential in this youth organization. we hope to empower people and through our research, we realize that there's a gap between the knowledge of tenants rights in the bay area's best, especially we're hoping to close that gap with our organization and just educate tenants on the right. and this is personal to write. this is how kind of started right? it is personal to me because my parents are immigrants who immigrated to this country and when they immigrated, they struggled a lot with renting in the bay area.

>> so you guys are very mature for your age and very impressed with what you've been able to do, kind of taking on a very adult topic is just being high schoolers. what kind of difference to want to see this making the community. >> yeah. so we believe that tenants rights affect everyone even with high schoolers, you can see that even though high schoolers, many of them aren't the ones that are actually signing agreement there still heavily impacted and for many high schoolers that are in like unsafe conditions due to like rights violations it hard for them to learn and it's hard for them to thrive. so we think that this is going to help youth, but also people that are of all ages who they're struggling with rights violations and you're the next generation of eventually at some point, a lot of kids are going to have to figure this out and become renters all on their own. and there so many times we hear kids saying i wish in high school i'd learn how like. >> what how the stock market

works and how to balance a checkbook and how the economy and a lot of kids might be saying the same thing. i wish i knew this sooner. how are you teaching kids in the community about this? what's like your goal? how are you getting out there? yeah. >> i think we really want to recruit more youth who are passionate about tenants rights because we are the next generation. we are the people who are going to be renting and it's important for us to know about our right. and i think even as soon as college, you know, second year in college after you live on campus in a lot of colleges for the first here. but by the second year, you are renting your very own apartment. and i think it's important to be educated on the right to hold. and what are you finding now that you've started this organization? you've been out there talking about it. what's the feedback you're getting from people? yes, so from this, we realize just how passionate so many people are. and we're so happy. we've been e-mailing organizations and tense right attorneys and we're just so grateful for all of the support that we've gotten from this. you know, it's it's not easy to found to

an organization and the fact that so many people are willing now to look at not only willing to help that just willing to support us in this journey is really great is is there one thing you think a tenant should know is there like a number one thing you would want to share with people now. one thing i would i would definitely the just cause that's really, really important. that's if you agree with i really agree with that one. i think to really, really look over their lease agreements before they sign. i know a lot of people don't take the time to be through them. and i think just taking photos and documenting all your communication with your landlord is really, really important because as issues come up and if you do have to go through the legal system, it's really important to have proof of conversations. have documents. take a picture on your phone and of people, our interest in this. they want to learn more. we can some details on our website. kron 4 dot com so we make sure people stay connected with the organization bait. rethink you so much for coming in. you

>> 4 is your local election headquarters and a new bill introduced in the legislature is taking aim at excessive homework in california. public schools. our capitol correspondent eytan wallace spoke with the lawmaker behind the sluggish legislation and has reaction from students. >> well, many californians can

probably look back at their upbringings and remember spending hours after school at their desk. doing homework. but now one lawmaker says she hopes to change that for the next generation. when the bell rings and the school day is over for students like 6 grader sophia johnson, the day is nowhere near over. she blames that on hours spent doing which is exhausting. it's overwhelming. >> and it's depressing that my whole day from when i wake up until when i go to bed is nearly all taken up with schoolwork. and that's why sophia's mother assembly member peeler. she says she authored ab 2, 9, 9, 9, also known as the healthy homework act. >> while it would not ban homework, the proposal would mandate local school boards and educational agencies to establish homer policies that consider impacts to students, physical and mental health all while including input from parents, teachers and students themselves. i think that this is going to make a huge impact for students that times have changed and our homework

policies don't always change with times. and so we need to make sure that we're >> addressing issues with the whole child and making sure that we're doing things that are effective and also the don't harm kids. it comes as a survey of more than 300,000 american students conducted by stanford university and the nonprofit organization challenge success. >> found 45% of students say workload and homework is the number one source of stress. 13,000, california high school students who took the survey report an average of 2 and a half hours of homework. >> every night we have student mental health crisis right now. and so if it's such a source of stress for kids and we know that taking stress off kids plates will make a difference in their mental health. this is something that we could really impact kids mental health practically overnight and she notes the bill is also tailored around equity. something california teacher of the year. kc cuny believes it's crucial, noting students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds may not have access to resources home like high-speed internet at the child's grade should

the most. now gets to be honored for that. we'll head to the east bay where a stray dog was rescued by antioch animal services after getting stuck in a can. now they say a pair of dogs had been running around the neighborhood of the twin creeks, apartments in antioch for weeks. and a resident nearby was able to get one of the dogs. but the other one just kept screaming off and running away. and soon after the dog then trapped himself by falling down into a can now was wedged there between the framework of the bridge. officials from the canal safety team provide animal services access to the canal and they were rescuing him there. they got him out. for working here to figure out who this doggie belongs to. so news to go back home. all right, a live look outside here at a very windy shot of the. leaves there in front of quite. how are we have gayle ong here? nice to see some blue skies has been a lot of

more closures coming to some major bay area roadways bar casa plans on closing part of the tracks and oakland, this weekend's kron four's rob nesbitt has the details. >> the site of paving and construction along the southbound lanes of i-680, are not new. this weekend will be the 4th and final time. the project closes the interstate from pleasanton starting 09:00pm friday and reopening at 04:00am monday. according to caltrans spokesperson for alameda county, janice morrow. we will be completely placing the roadway. >> with cement, which is a on long-lasting material. so in the roadway reopens 04:00am ride for a moment. traffic will be rerouted during the work as well as along highway. 37 starting on friday at 09:00pm. we're back on westbound state route. 37. >> in the to the sonoma county line, caltrans spokesperson for that area chinchilla. >> says this is the second weekend lanes have been closed to traffic at this location. the detour is a long one.

ramon for next month. i do want to bring your attention now to some breaking news for getting just now into the kron for news room. >> out of cal poly in humboldt the school putting this message up on its website saying that the pro-palestinian protesters, her occupying buildings on campus have now until 4 o'clock this afternoon friday. april. 26 to leave campus. this was the message posted on the school's website. it reads in part here as part of an ongoing urgent effort to protect life and safety in the ongoing crisis of occupied buildings. cal poly humboldt is offering any of those currently in the buildings, the opportunity to leave with a guarantee of no immediate arrest. this does not, however, eliminate university conduct related sanctions or legal implications. those who walk out peacefully by the deadline, which again has 4 o'clock, will not be immediately arrested and will be able to leave campus without being arrested. the

school says that these protests have been happening since monday. there's kids that are been occupying. siemens hall. they've said they've made an effort destroyed the building. there's the continued destruction of property and other lawlessness in the central part of campus. so this is cause some complex operational issues for the school. and they've also closed the facility. they're saying the occupation is having a negative impact on other students were trying to complete classes at the end. the semester, cal poly humboldt, the campus is closed throughout the remainder of the semester. all the work and instruction is being done remotely. again. they're offering these people who are having this pope, pro palestinian protest the chance to leave buildings without the immediate chance of being arrested. again, the offer is open until 4 o'clock this afternoon, which is about 8 minutes from now on. they posted this on their web site just after 2 o'clock this

>> all right. it's friday. it's the end of our. >> 2 hour long show here. we have gail here to go over 3 of 3. and gail, you're going to kick things off. yes. so we begin with this sweet video from the oakland mountain lion cubs relaxing with some have time and this willow and her sister maple. they were rescued by the oakland zoo last year after their mother was killed in a road collisions. according to zoo officials. the cubs are still waiting to be moved to there for ever home. but it does seem like they're having a relaxing stay california. that looks just so relaxing, the end of panic. yeah, tackle damon. just chill axel like they're all right. quite the rescue now to show people because firefighters in colombia face to quite the challenge as they work to retrieve a cow that was trapped in the water. now there's the cow like all the effort you to get the cow out. the fire service showing us here. the rescue operation in action. crews able to bring the cow to safety these ropes
