The Paley Center for Media uploaded about a minutes worth of footage from a 1939 TV-Play on their site. They do require you to have their media player. No, I don't work for them.

I do wish they had uploaded the full 5 minutes of fragments that exist from it. From what I've heard, somebody recorded this with a old type home movie camera. That is why it runs shorter and is lacking the sound that was part of the original telecast.

I also hear they have an episode of "Mary Kay and Johnny", the first USA TV sitcom. I wish THAT was viewable to see online.

"...This film contains scenes from NBC's Thursday Night Program of August 31, 1939: a live adaptation of the theatrical melodrama The Streets of New York or Poverty is No Crime."

...better than what they have on Thursday nights now.

Even though its hardly a classic..the site also features a 2 minute clip of the infamous 1969 ABC-TV "Turn-ON". Talk about bizarre !!!

Anyway the Paley Center by offering "Turn-ON" even for 2 minutes online..at least that puts an end to the rumors that had been published by so many TV triva books over the years where "by demand" from ABC-TV, the sponsors..and even guest star Tim Conway..all tapes of the show were "destroyed" or "locked up in a vault never to be seen in any context ever again". The Paley Center killed those stories.

Wow- thanks for pointing that out - I searched and found a whole bunch of weird stuff... I'm surprised to say, "Turn On" looked weirdly great! And, internet lore implies there are unaired episodes? Hard to believe that stuff hasn't leaked!

The site is a goldmine! Thank you again, I wouldn't have searched further had you not pointed out "Turn On!"

They also have episodes of the craptacular 1976 ABC sitcom "Mr. T and Tina", starring Pat Morita who left his cushy role as Arnold on Happy Days only to fail with this mess. Now if only they would put them online for viewing.
